Anuria
The absence of urine production
Bowman’s capsule
The capsule that surrounds the glomerulus of the kidney
Cast
Cylinder-shaped elements with flat or rounded ends, differing in composition and size, that form when protein from the breakdown of cells accumulates and precipitates in the kidney tubules and is washed into the urine
Catheterization
The procedure during which a catheter is inserted into a vessel, an organ, or a body cavity
Clean-catch midstream urine specimen
A type of urine specimen that requires special cleaning of the external genitalia to avoid contamination by organisms residing near the external opening of the urethra and is used to identify the number snd types of pathogens present in urine; sometimes referred to as mid void
Crystal
Naturally produced solid of definite form; commonly seen in urine specimens, especially those permitted to cool
Fecal occult blood test (FOBT)
A test to find hidden blood in the stool
Forst morning urine specimen
A urine specimen that is collected after a night’s sleep; contains greater concentrations of substances that collect over time than specimens taken during the day
Glomerulus
A group of capillaries in the renal corpuscle
Glycosuria
The presence of significant levels of glucose in the urine
Hematuria
The presence of blood in the urine
Hilum
The indented side of a lymph node. Also, the part of the renal sinus of the kidney through which renal artery, renal vein, and ureter enter the kidney
Lithotripsy
The crushing of a stone in the renal pelvis, ureter, or bladder by mechanical force or sound waves
Loop of Henle
The portion of the renal tubule that curves back toward the renal corpuscle and twists again to become the distal convoluted tubule
Proteinuria
An excess of protein in the urine
Renal Corpuscle
Corpuscle that is composed of the glomerulus and the glomerular capsule. The filtration of blood occurs here
Renal cortex
The outer-most layer of the kidney
Renal medulla
The middle portion of the kidney
Renal pelvis
The internal structure of the renal sinus in the kidney. Urine flow’s from the renal pelvis down the ureter
Trigone
The triangle formed by the openings of the two ureters and the urethra in the internal floor of the bladder
Turbidity
Cloudiness, often due to small particles present in a liquid
Ureters
Long, slender, muscular tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the urinary bladder
Urethra
The tube that conveys urine from the bladder during urination
Urinalysis
The physical, chemical, and microscopic evaluation of urine to obtain information about body health and disease
Renal columns
The portion of the renal cortes that extends down between the renal pyramids
