Two types of matter
Pure substances and mixtures
Two types of Pure substances
Elements and Compounds
Two types of mixtures
Homogeneous and Heterogeneous
Mixture
two or more elements or compounds that are physically mixed together but not chemically joined
Homogeneous
Evenly mixed
Heterogeneous
Unevenly mixed
Solution definiton
Homogeneous mixture in which one substances is dissolved in another substance (consists of solute and solvent)
Solvent
substance in which the solute is dissolved
solute
substance dissolved in the solution (Particles may be ions, atoms, or molecules)
Suspension
Heterogeneous mixture of water with non-dissolve material
Suspension characteristics
not evenly mixed
individual components retain their own properties
individual components can be easily seen
can be easily seperated
appear uniform when mixed but settle out.
Suspension examples
salt & pepper mix, rocks, cereal, bag of assorted candy, Chocolate Quik, Muddy water,Pulpy oj, Oil & Vinegar dressing
Solution characteristics
Evenly mixed
Properties of combined components are usually different than those of each component
Individual components can not be easily seen
not as easily seperated
Solubility
amount of a substance that can dissolve in 100 grams of solvent at a given time
ability of a solvent to dissolve a solute (depends on temp and molecular structure)
temperature of a liquid increases = solubility of a solvent increases
brass
made of copper & zinc
Matter as mixtures
combinations of 2 or more substances where each substance retains its individual properties.
How mixtures are similar to compounds
made from two or more substances
difference between mixtures and compounds
mixtures do not form chemical bonds
Homogeneous mixture
same throughout and has a composition/properties that are identical regardless of the sample
how to identify a solution
one phase
uniformly mixed
won’t settle out
small particles
how to identify a heterogeneous mixture
not uniformly mixed
more than one phase
will settle out
larger particles
Special types of heterogeneous mixture
suspensions and colloids
Colloids
appear uniform but they do not settle out. However, their particles are too large to be classified as a homogeneous solution.
