Similarities and Differences between light dependent and independent reactions

Light dependent

Needs Light

Takes place in the thylakoid membrane

Uses chlorophyll a light energy absorbing pigment and converts it into chemical energy

ADP is phosphorylated and converted to ATP
NADP is reduced to form NADPH

ATP transfers energy to the Light independent stage
NADPH transfers hydrogen to the Light independent stage

Products: ATP, NADPH, O2 (as H2O is oxidised)

Light Independent

Doesn’t need light

Takes place in the stroma

Uses the reactants of the light dependent reactions

Energy from ATP and hydrogen from NADPH is used to form glucose from CO2

Products : Glucose
