Action verbs
Verbs that express physical or mental actions.
Ex. speak, eat, sing.
Stative verbs
Verbs that describe a state of being.
Ex. imagine, like, look.
Transitive verbs
Verbs that require an object to make sense.
Ex. I love my family, I hate spiders, I miss my dog.
Intransitive verbs
Verbs that do not need direct objects to complete their meaning.
Ex. we danced, she laughed, I cheered.
Auxiliary verbs
Verbs used in forming the tenses, moods, and voices of other verbs.
Ex. He is singing a song, I have danced along.
Modal verbs
A kind of auxiliary verb used to express necessity or possibility.
Ex. could, can, should.
Phrasal verbs
Verbs made up of several words used together, usually a verb combined with an adverb or preposition.
Ex. take off, put up with, look into.
Regular verbs
Verbs that follow standard patterns of inflection.
Ex. want and wanted, play and played, miss and missed.
Irregular verbs
Verbs that do not follow standard patterns of inflection – changing with tense.
Ex. eat, ate, and eaten, see, saw, and seen, know, knew, and known
