Common nail
used for general construction

Box nail
A nail having a flat head and a shank
-more slender than a common nail of the same length
-used in light construction

Casing nail
-used in finish work
-head may remain visible

Finishing Nail
-used in cabinetry
-head not exposed

Brad nail
-Small finishing nail
-Used for detail work such as attaching molding or trim.

Flooring nail
nail for fastening floor boards

Cut nail
nail having a tapered, rectangular form with a blunt point, cut from sheet steel
-used for wood flooring

Roofing nail
has barbed shank and for fastening shingles

Umbrella nail
Used to fasten roof to wood purlins.

Double-headed nails
has two heads and for nailing temporary structures and formworks

Concrete nail
has threaded shank and for nailing concrete

Ring-shank nail
A nail having a series of concentric grooves on its shank for increased holding power

Wood screw
A threaded metal fastener with a pointed end which forms its own matching thread in the wood member into which it is inserted.

Self tapping screw
A coarse threaded screw designed to tap its corresponding female thread as it is driven.
-used to connect GI sheet to purlins

Lag screw/ Coach screw
Screw used where great pressure to turn is required
Machine screw
-metal fastener used with nut
-driven into tapped hole

Cap screw
metal fastener for machine parts

Sheet metal screw
A coarse-threaded screw for fastening sheet metal and other thin material.

Set screw
a machine screw with no head for screwing all the way into a threaded hole

Thumb screw
-has flattened knurled head
-turned by thumb or finger

Screw eye
A screw having a ring-shaped head.

Carriage Bolt
A bolt with round head and a square neck.
-used when head is inaccessible for tightening

Machine bolt
A bolt having a flat bearing surface and a square or hexagonal head for turning with a wrench.
-used when head is accessible for tightening

Stove bolt
A small, coarse-threaded machine screw.

J-bolt
A J-shaped metal rod threaded at one end to receive a nut.

U bolt
threaded on both ends, used to attach something round to something flat

Eye bolt
ring shaped bolt

Clevis
A U-shaped piece with holes into which a link is inserted and through which a pin or bolt is run. It is used as a fastening device which allows rotational motion.

Turnbuckle
A metal link or sleeve internal threaded at each end, used for coupling and tightening two parts, such as the threaded ends of two rods or stays.

Expansion bolt
An anchor bolt having a split casing that expands mechanically to engage the sides of a hole drilled in masonry or concrete.

Toggle Bolt
-has two wings
is a fastener for hanging things on hollow walls such as drywall.

Fox bolt
An anchor bolt having a split end to receive a foxtail wedge as it is screwed into a blind hole.

lock nut
A nut specially constructed to provide extra friction between itself and a screw or bolt.

Castellated nut
A nut having radial slits on its outer face to allow a locking pin or wire to be inserted in both the nut and hole in its bolt.
Also called CASTLE NUT

Cap nut
A nut having a hexagonal base and a domed top to cover the threaded end of a screw.
Also called ACORN NUT.

Wing nut
A nut having two flat projecting pieces that provide a grip for tightening with the thumb and forefinger.
Also called THUMBNUT.

Lock washer
A washer specially constructed to prevent a nut from shaking loose.

Load indicating washer
indicates tension in bolt

Expansion shield
A lead or plastic sleeve inserted into a predrilled hole and expanded by driving a bolt screw into it.
Also called EXPANSION SLEEVE.

Double expansion shield
for bricks and blocks (so they wont crack)

Wedge anchor
-strongest anchor for heavy materials
-for brick and concrete

Sleeve anchor
-for lightweight materials
-concrete and brick

Template Hinge
a mortise hinge manufactured to fit the recess and match the arrangement of holes of hollow metal doors and frames
Ball bearing hinge
The hinge equipped with ball bearing between the knuckles to reduce friction and ensure ease of operation
Fast pin hinge
The hinge having a non-removable pin
Loose pin hinge
A hinge having a removable pin so that a door can be unhung by separating two leaves

Loose joint hinge
A hinge having a knuckle formed from half of each leaf, with the upper half removable from the pin

Spring hinge
A hinge containing a coiled spring in its barrel for closing the door automatically

Double acting hinge
permits a door to swing in either direction and are usually fitted with springs to bring the door to a closed position after opening

Piano hinge/continuous hinge
A long, narrow hinge that runs the full length of the two surfaces to which its leaves are joined

Butt Hinge
The most common type of hinge where one leaf attaches to the door's edge, the other to its jamb

Strap hinge
A hinge having two long leaves for securing to the adjacent faces of a door and doorjamb

Cross garnet hinge
A T-Shaped strap hinge with the crosspiece as the stationary member and the long stem being the movable leaf.

Parliament hinge
An H-shaped hinge having a protruding knuckle so that a door can stand away from the wall when fully opened

Olive Knuckle Hinge
A paumelle having an oval-shaped knuckle

Invisible hinge/concealed hinge
A hinge consisting of a number of flat plates rotating about a central pin, with shoulders mortised into the door edge and doorframe so as to be concealed when closed

Gravity hinge
A hinge that closes automatically by means of gravity

Paumelle hinge
A hinge having a single, pivoting joint

Flush hinge
This type of hinge does not require a recess to be cut. They are not as strong as butt hinges but can be used for light-weight doors and small box construction.

Butterfly hinge
This is often used on light-weight doors and different shapes and patterns are available. They are generally easy to fit.

Barrel Hinge
-comes in two parts
-the threaded part is screwed in pre drilled hole
-easy to fit and easily dismantled

Barrel bolt
type of bolt that can be accessed on one side only
