Basic building blocks of matter

Chemical Change

Any change in a substance's physical or chemical properties. Usually produces a new substance.

Chemical Property

A characteristic of matter that describes the chemical makeup of a substance.

Condensation

The phase change from a gas to a liquid.

Density

Amount of mass in a given volume.

Deposition

The phase change from a gas into a solid.

Evaporation

The phase change from a liquid to a gas.

Extensive Property

Properties of matter that can vary for a given substance or material.

Freezing

The phase change from a liquid to a solid.

Gas

Matter composed of atoms very loosely packed together. Does not have a definite volume or shape.

Indicators of a Chemical Change

A new substance is formed; production of light; formation of bubbles (gas); color change; change in odor; change in temperature

Intensive Property

Properties of matter that never change for a given substance or material.

Liquid

Matter that is composed of atoms loosely packed together. Has definite volume, but does not have definite shape.

Matter

Anything that takes up space and has mass.

Melting

The phase change from a solid to a liquid.

Phase Change

The change of one state of matter to another.

Physical Change

Any change that does not involve a change in the substances chemical makeup.

Physical Property

A characteristic of matter that can be observed or measured.

Plasma

Matter that is most like a gas. Occurs when a gas is heated to a very high temperature and electrons become removed from the atoms.

Qualitative Property

Properties of matter that can be observed using senses.

Quantitative Property

Properties of matter that are measurable.

Solid

Matter composed of atoms tightly packed together. Has a definite shape and volume.

Solubility

How well a substance dissolves into another substance to produce a solution.

Sublimation

The phase change from a solid into a gas.
