Prophase
Chromosomes appear and spindle fibers begin to form.

Metaphase
Chromosomes line up in the middle.

Anaphase
Chromosomes are pulled apart to opposite poles of the cell.

Telophase
Nuclear membrane reappears around the nuclei of each new cell.

Cytokinesis
2 brand new identical cells are formed as the cytoplasm divides. The 2 cells have completely separated.

Reasons Cells Divide
Growth, Repair, Replacement of Body Tissue
Centrioles
a small cylindrical organelle near the nucleus in animal cells, occurring in pairs and involved in the development of spindle fibers in cell division.
spindle fibers
help pull apart the chromosomes with in a cell during cell division
Chromosomes
Threadlike X shaped structure of nucleic acids found in the nucleus of most living cells, carrying genetic information in the form of genes.
Chromatid
half of a chromosome
Chromatin
material that makes up chromosomes; found in a jumbled/tangled mess during interphase.
