Matter
Anything that has mass and volume.
Kinetic Particle Theory
Theory stating that all matter is made up of small particles that are in constant motion.
Solid
State of matter with closely packed particles in a fixed arrangement, vibrating in place.
Liquid
State of matter with loosely packed particles that flow and move in random zig-zag motion.
Gas
State of matter with particles that are far apart, moving freely and randomly.
Brownian Motion
Random movement of microscopic particles in a fluid due to collisions with surrounding molecules.
Melting Point
The fixed temperature at which a solid changes to a liquid.
Boiling Point
The fixed temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas.
Condensation
The process by which a gas changes to a liquid upon cooling.
Freezing
The process by which a liquid changes to a solid upon cooling.
Kinetic Energy
Energy possessed by a body due to its motion; related to temperature.
Diffusion
Movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to lower concentration.
Boyle's Law
Principle stating that the pressure of a fixed mass of gas is inversely proportional to its volume.
Pressure
Force acting over a unit area; measured in Pascals (Pa).
Heating Curve
Graph showing the temperature changes of a substance as it is heated.
Cooling Curve
Graph showing the temperature changes of a substance as it is cooled.
Relative Molecular Mass
Mass of a molecule compared to the mass of carbon-12, influencing rates of diffusion.
