Child maltreatment
A childs Rights are not being met
Types of maltreatment
Neglect, physical abuse, emotional a use, sexual abuse and witnessing family violence
Neglect
When caregivers fail to meet child's physical, emotional and social needs through inattention or omission
Physical abuse
Physical injury inflicted on child
Physical injury categories common of physical abuse
Bruises, burns, fractures, head injuries, abdominal injuries
Abusive head trauma
A nonaccidental head injury with or without impact when a child is shaken violently
Female genital mutilation/cutting (FMG/C)
Partial or total removal of clitosus, prepuce, Labias, and other harmful procedures to female genitalia
Emotional abuse
Emotional harm caused by threats, verbal abuse, isolation, exploitation, or inadequate nurturing
Family violence
Any form of maltreatment or neglect experienced from a family member ,
Sexual abuse
Involvement of children in sexual activity
Behavioural and emotional indicators
Signs, symptoms or clues that lead educators to believe the child is being maltreated.
Primary prevention
ECLC program policies and practises that supports relationships with children and families so that child maltreatment doesn't happen
Secondary prevention
Identifying, documenting and reporting maltreatment
Documentation
Notations in children's files concerning illness, observation of development or suspected abuse.
Tertiary protection
Creating a care plan for a child's recovery.
