Motivation

Homeostasis
A state of balance among all the body systems needed for the body to survive and function correctly.
Set Point
Point of homeostasis (or equilibrium) to which the systems return.
Hedonic
Food ingestion that is driven by palatability rather than bodily need (Pleasure and Reward).
Hypovolemic Thirst
Occurs when the blood volume drops due to a loss of extracellular water.
Osmotic Thirst
Occurs when the fluid content decreases inside the body's cells.
Ghrelin
Orexigenic peptide hormone synthesized in the stomach and released into the bloodstream during fasting.
Cholecystokinin (CCK)
Peptide hormone released by the stomach and small intestine as food passes into the duodenum.
Androgens
Class of hormones responsible for a number of male characteristics and functions.
Testosterone
Major sex hormone in males.
Estrus
Period when females are ovulating (mostly in mammals).
Cortisol
Most abundant glucocorticoid in humans, producing additional physiological stress responses.
Aggression
Forceful or assertive behavior intended to harm or control another.
Pheromones
Airborne chemicals released by an animal that have physiological or behavioral effects on another animal of the same species.
James-Lange Theory
Emotional experience results from the physiological arousal that precedes it.
Broca's Aphasia
Language impairment caused by damage to Broca's area, resulting in difficulty producing spoken language.
Wernicke's Aphasia
Language impairment that results in difficulty understanding and producing spoken and written language.
