Majority rule
A fundamental principle of traditional principle of traditional democratic theory. In a democracy, choosing among alternatives requires that the majority desire to be respected.
Majority rule with minority rights
Democratic principle that a government follows the preferences of the majority of voters but protects the interests of the minority (via the constitution)
Direct Democracy
Form of gov where each citizen has an actual say in the affairs of government
Representative Democracy
Form of gov where each citizens elect representatives to rule on their behalf
Monarchy
Form of gov ruled by a king or queen
Absolute monarchy
Form of gov in which king or queen has all of the power
Constitutional or limited monarchy
Form of gov in which king or queen shares the power to rule with the people
Socialist
Government system and economic model where individuals and government share ownership in major businesses. Government takes a larger role.
Communist
type of economic system that requires the government to own and control all aspects of businesses, property and economics with complete control over the social lives of citizens as well
Totalitarian regime
A form of government with total control; little freedom or opposition is allowed
Dictatorship
Form of gov controlled by one person who allows very little freedom
Oligarchy
Form of gov ruled by a small group of people (that have total control)
Theocracy
Form of gov in which a country is ruled by religious leaders and religious law
Junta
A form of totalitarian government ruled by a small, military group that took power by force
