Quantum Mechanical Model
A model that describes the behavior of electrons in atoms using principles of quantum mechanics.
Orbital
A region in an atom where there is a high probability of finding electrons.
S-orbital
A spherical orbital that can hold a maximum of 2 electrons.
P-orbital
An orbital shape that consists of three separate lobes, allowing for a maximum of 6 electrons.
D-orbital
An orbital with a more complex shape that can accommodate up to 10 electrons.
F-orbital
The most complex orbital with 7 variations, capable of holding up to 14 electrons.
Aufbau Principle
A principle stating that electrons fill orbitals starting from the lowest energy level to the highest.
Pauli's Exclusion Principle
A principle stating that no two electrons in an atom can have the same set of four quantum numbers.
Hund's Rule
A rule stating that electrons must fill each orbital singly before pairing up in any orbital.
Electron Configuration
A notation that shows the arrangement of electrons in an atom's orbitals.
Carbon Configuration
The electron configuration of carbon is 1s² 2s² 2p².
Chromium Configuration
The electron configuration of chromium is [Ar] 3d⁵ 4s².
Silver Configuration
The electron configuration of silver is [Kr] 4d¹⁰ 5s¹.
