Lewins Three Step Model
Unfreezing, Movement, Refreezing
Unfreezing
this step involves preparing for change by breaking down existing mindsets and behaviors. it creates awareness of the need for change and builds motivation to move away from the current state
Movement
in this stage the actual change takes place. new processes are introduced and start adapting to the new way
Refreeze
once this change is implemented, this step focuses one solidfying and reinforcing the new behaviors and procsses. ensures change becomes permanent
Kotters 8 step plan for implementing change

step 1 (unfreeze)
establish a sense of urgency by creating a compelling reason for why change is needed
step 2 (unfreeze)
form a coalition with enough power to lead the change
step 3 (unfreeze)
create new vision to direct the change and strategies for achieving the vision
step 4 (unfreeze)
communicate the vision
step 5 (movement)
empower others to act on the vision by removing barriers to change and encouraging risk taking and creating problem solving
step 6 (movement)
plan for, create, and reward short term wins that move the organization toward the new vision
step 7 (movement)
consolidate improvements, reassess changes, and make necessary adjustments in the new programs
step 8 (refreeze)
reinforce the change by demonstrating the relationship between new behaviors and organizational success
