WHMIS
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System; Canada’s system for providing workers with information about hazardous chemical products used in the workplace.
SDS
Safety Data Sheets; documents that summarize hazards and safety precautions for a product and provide more detailed hazard information than the label.
Pictogram
A graphic symbol on a label indicating a hazard; most have a red square on its side border and, with the symbol, communicate the hazard.
GHS Pictograms
The standardized set of hazard symbols used under the Globally Harmonized System for classifying and labeling chemicals.
Corrosion (pictogram)
Pictogram representing corrosive hazards to metals and to skin/eyes.
Exclamation Mark (pictogram)
Pictogram signaling health hazards such as acute toxicity, skin/eye irritation, and other adverse effects.
Skull and Crossbones (pictogram)
Pictogram indicating acute toxicity; substances may be fatal if swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin.
Flame (pictogram)
Pictogram for flammable substances or materials that ignite easily or react dangerously with water/air.
Flame Over Circle (pictogram)
Pictogram representing oxidizing hazards; substances that can cause or intensify fires.
Gas Cylinder (pictogram)
pictogram indicating gases under pressure; may explode if heated or dropped.
Exploding Bomb (pictogram)
pictogram for self-reactive substances and organic peroxides with explosion risk; handle with care.
Health Hazard (pictogram)
pictogram representing serious health hazards such as carcinogens, respiratory sensitizers, or reproductive toxicity.
Biohazardous Infectious Material
Health hazard category for materials harmful to living organisms (viruses, toxins, medical waste); stored in designated areas.
