What is the only bony link between the upper extremity and the axial skeleton?
The clavicle's articulation with the sternum at the sternoclavicular joint.
What are the key bony landmarks of the shoulder girdle?
Manubrium, clavicle, coracoid process, acromion process, glenoid fossa, lateral border, inferior angle, medial border, superior border, superior angle.
What type of joint is the sternoclavicular joint classified as?
A multiaxial, arthrodial joint.
What movements occur at the sternoclavicular joint?
Anteriorly 15 degrees with protraction, posteriorly 15 degrees with retraction, and some slight rotary gliding movements.
How is the acromioclavicular joint classified?
As arthrodial.
What is the range of total gliding and rotational motion at the acromioclavicular joint?
20 to 30 degrees accompanied by other shoulder girdle motions.
What does the scapulothoracic joint rely on for movement?
The sternoclavicular and acromioclavicular joints.
What are the primary movements of the shoulder girdle?
Abduction, adduction, downward rotation, upward rotation, elevation and depression.
What muscle pulls the scapula towards the spinal column and is involved in adduction?
Rhomboid muscles.
What muscles are primarily involved in shoulder girdle movements?
Trapezius, rhomboid, levator scapulae, serratus anterior, pectoralis minor.
What is the role of the serratus anterior muscle during abduction?
Draws the medial border of the scapula away from the vertebrae and assists in upward rotation.
How does upward rotation of the scapula occur?
Through the action of the serratus anterior and trapezius muscles.
What is the action of the pectoralis minor muscle?
Abduction, downward rotation, and depression of the scapula.
What is the effect of poor posture on the shoulder girdle?
It can contribute to kyphosis and a less functional position for the glenohumeral joint.
