How have funeral flowers and customs changed in the last century?

Floral shops used to be overrun with hundreds of flower orders for only one funeral.

In Lieu of Flowers:

please omit flowers, send a contribution to the organization instead. This may make people feel deprived of sympethtic expression so the SAF recommends saying “sympathic flowers and contributions are accepted.”

Common funeral floral display’s

Casket flowers, sprays, pillow, baskets, wreaths. hearts, crosses and other bouquets.

solid, broken: deep sad. Bleeding: Red over white heart. Open: like wreaths

Structure of a wreath

polychromatic (multi colored), wet or hard foam forms. The center wreath is a ribbon wrapped hard foam form. The cage holder is secured at focal point area.

Open heart stucture and variotion

Structure: open mid. sat foam foundation, covered w/ribbon, tulle ect.

double heart: bond eternally, love/bond for generations

broken heart

pop. in early 1900s. made on a solid heart form, all white flower bakcground and created with a zigzag line off red flowers : intenese loss and grief.

number listed, salal leaf and carnation

rosary

Made on a special rosary string, floral replica of the catholic symbol of faith. Usually rosebuds into the rosary string in place of beads. Draped over casket .

pillow design

“eternal and peaceful rest” long time fav. floral tribute in several regions. reps. familiy, home, comfort and God's watchful care. using hard or wettable foam forms trimed with pleated ribbon and lace. early 1900s most popular set pieces, made on wire frame. Script was added.

writs or held, elegant and convenient. made of wristlet or fabric with wire foundation.

less flowers and desire to show unique/expensive flowers. (wide and open)

Colonial:

most widely selected for brides and party. Nosegay design of English-Georgian and Victorian periods. Often circled with a collar of lace, fabric, color wire and leaves/beads.

Clutch

Hand-tied bouquet. Most natural. ribbon handle but shows stems.

Cascade bouquet

popular, long/flowy or short/simple, uses foam

Basket bouquet

Informal flower look. afternoon summer wedding, garden, outdoorsy. Can decor after.

Arm

Presentation/ queens bouquet. natual/luxurious. picked and placed.

Aislabra or aisle candelabra add formatilty to an evening ceremony. (posts hold a candle in a glass hurricane cover, battery operated and adorned).

A canopy maybe. A chuppah is a traiditonal Jewish canopy. A wedding arch can be used and can frame members during the processional, ceremony and recessional.

What are important items of discussion at the consultation?

Names, contact info, colors, container styles, venue, styles and flowers they like, photos of dresses and other decor, flowers for attendants and bridal party/family, personal flowers, ceremony decorations, reception decorations, home flowers, rehearsal dinner flowers and other decorations.

Name some qualifications neccesary for a competent bridal consultant.

Experienced in sales and knows flowers, bouquet styles, ceremony and reception decorations and pricing. The pro’s trained in color theory & planning in distinctive weddings. Up to date with bridal trends.

promotion importance:

show and tell activity, displays remind customers of wedding flowers. You can stage a bridal show and highlight wedding products and services. The shop becomes more visitble to prespective brides.

Advertising:

Communicate through media. More direct advertising the better. Promote specific wedding things. Target brides. Mail advertising and send info to brides.

Networking

interact w/related business to share info & services. Advertise together so less expensive. and more access to customers. Other companies: salons, tuxedo shops, catering companies, jewelry stores, dept store bridal registries
