Louisiana Purchase
Acquisition of territory from France in 1803 that doubled the size of the United States.
Mexican War
Conflict between the U.S. and Mexico from 1846 to 1848, resulting in U.S. acquisition of territories including California and Texas.
Annexation of Hawaii
The U.S. formally incorporated Hawaii in 1898 against the wishes of many native Hawaiians.
Civil War
The conflict from 1861 to 1865 fought between Northern states (Union) and Southern states (Confederacy) over issues including slavery.
Monroe Doctrine
U.S. foreign policy that opposed European colonialism in the Americas and asserted American influence in the Western Hemisphere.
Cinco de Mayo
A holiday commemorating the Mexican victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.
Panama Canal
A canal through Panama, completed in 1914, that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
Dominion of Canada
The formation of a semi-autonomous federation in 1867 that included Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia.
Imperialism
Policy of extending a country's influence through diplomacy or military force over less powerful nations.
Opium Wars
Conflict between China and Britain in the mid-19th century over British trade of opium, leading to Chinese concessions.
David Livingston
A Scottish missionary and explorer noted for his travels in Africa and efforts to end the slave trade.
Boxer Rebellion
An anti-foreign, anti-colonial uprising in China between 1899 and 1901 aimed at ending foreign influence.
Simon Bolívar
A Venezuelan military and political leader who played a key role in Latin American independence movements.
Criollo
A term for people of European ancestry born in Latin America, considered second-class citizens under Spanish rule.
East India Company
A British company granted a royal charter to control trade in India, becoming a powerful political entity.
The Great Trek
The migration of Dutch-speaking settlers (Boers) in South Africa seeking independence from British rule.
Siam
A Southeast Asian kingdom that remained uncolonized and is now known as Thailand, meaning 'Land of the Free.'
