Workbook
A collection of cells arranged in the form of a table that contains the actual data and calculations.
Worksheet
Small box that stores an individual piece of data or a calculation in a worksheet
Cell
The content within a cell.
Value
A stack of cells arranged vertically from the top to the bottom of a worksheet - labeled with a letter.
Column
Collection of cells arranged horizontally from left to right of a worksheet- labeled with a number of
Row
Built in method for performing a calculation in excel
Function
A group of menu items used to manipulate workbooks
File
A group of menu items used to format the appearance of data in cells
Home
Group of menu items that includes features for specializing elements into workbooks, such as charts, pictures, and shapes
Insert
Group of menu items used to insert freehand sketches into worksheets
Draw
Group of menu items used to format the appearance of worksheets when they are printed

Group of menu items used to perform calculations using excels built in functions
Formulas
Group of menu items used to aid in importing and working with data

Group of menu items that are used to obtain assistance on spreadsheet features

Group of menu options that allows the user to change how much of the worksheet appears in the window

Window
The area of a worksheet that is visible on the screen
Pane
The options that determine whether gridlines, column letters, and row numbers are visible in the worksheet
Show
The bar located at the top of an Excel worksheet. It displays the name of the application and the name of the spreadsheet.
Title bar
The bar located below the title bar. Provides access to tools commonly associated with task performed in an Excel workbook.
Tool bar
A bar located beneath the toolbar in an Excel worksheet, where the user can add or edit the contents of a cell
Formula bar
The "fx" symbol located to the left of the formula bar. Users can click on the symbol and select built-in calculations that can be applied to data.
Insert function icon
Changing the appearance of the data and cells in a worksheet
Formatting
A consecutive block of cells, arranged in a row, a column, or a combination of both. For example, A1:B3 is the range of cells that includes A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, and B3.
Range
The style or design of letters, numbers, or other symbols
Font face
The size of letters, numbers, or other symbols
Font size
A label, generally, at the top of a column of data, used to describe the rest of the data
Header
An option in the number format, drop-down menu that defines any type of number and can be configured to display the number in standardized ways.
Number
Used to define a number as money; currency values will be displayed with the monetary symbol appropriate for the currency described in two decimal places
Currency
Used to define a number as money; the accounting data type has fewer options in the currency type
Accounting
Used to display the number in a cell as a date
Date
Used to display the contents of a cell as a specific time of day
Time
Used to display the contents of a cell as a percent
Percentage
An icon in the alignment group of the home menu that, when selected, spans, or wraps the content of a cell across multiple lines within the same cell, so that all the content is showing
Wrap text
An icon in the font group of the home menu that, when selected, gives multiple options to add lines, or borders, to one or more sides of a cell
Border
A feature that allows you users to re-organize data based on the values in one or more columns.
Sorting
A feature that allows users to limit the number of visible rows in a worksheet
Filtering
The calculations performed in a spreadsheet.
Formulas
The calculation prescribed by a formula in a spreadsheet.
Expression
A formula that produces a consistent value
Static
A formula that references and responds to changes and values in other cells
Dynamic
Sequential rules to follow in order to solve an expression with multiple operations

The information that a function requires to perform the intended calculation
Argument
A function that counts the number of numbers in a data set
Count
A function that counts the number of cells that have values, example, non-blank cells
COUNTA
A function that calculates the simple average of a data set
Average
The function that displays the largest cell value in a data set
Max
A function that displays the smallest cell value in a data set
Min
A cell reference that automatically updates when it is copied from one cell to another
Relative reference
A cell reference that stays fixed when a formula is copied from one cell to another
Absolute reference
When one part of the cell reference, either the column or the row, is fixed (Absolute) and the other part is relative (changes based on proximity to other cells)
Mixed reference
Both the column and row references are relative and will change when the references copied and pasted to other cells
A1
The column reference is absolute and will remain constant when copied and pasted to other cells. The row reference is relative, and will change when copied and pasted to cells and other rows of the worksheet.
$A1
The row reference is absolute and will remain constant when copied and pasted to other cells. The column reference is relative, and will change when copied and pasted to cells and other columns of the worksheet.

Parsing Data
A tool in the data tools group that separates groups of text into individual columns
Text to Columns
A character or symbol that demonstrates where data should be split
Delimiter
Data that are entered more than once, when all elements of the data are the same
Duplicate Data
Changing the width of a cell
Resizing
A feature in the font group, that thickens and darkens the font face, making it stand out
Bold
Aligning values in the center of a cell
Centering
The way values in a cell are positioned
Alignment
An Excel tool that finds values and replaces them with other specified values
Find and Replace
A function that separates the values of a cell into multiple cells based on a delimiter
TEXTSPLIT
The first row in a data set that contains labels, describing the information in the data set
Column Headings
A value that falls outside and expected range of values
Outlier
A container within an excel worksheet that can be used to easily store, edit, and format data.
Table
A column in an excel table in which a calculation is created in any of the cells and then automatically applied to all the cells in that column
Calculated column
A row added to a table that automatically displays the sum of values in a column. Users can format the row to display other functions.
Total row
A feature that allows users to display table rows based on values in a specific column
Table filters
A table that re-organizes and summarizes data from a more complex table based on one or more categories
Pivotal
The elements of a data set that are measured. It makes sense to perform calculations (sum, average, or count) on quantitative data
Quantitative data
Labels or descriptions of the data and a data set
qualitative data
The part of a calculation to which an algorithm is applied example: revenue
Measure
The part of a calculation that is applied to the measure. Example average revenue.
Algorithm
An element of a pivot table that creates the data as they are placed in the pivot table
Filters
An element of a pivot table that defines how source data will be categorized in a column
Columns
An element of a pivot table that defines how source data will be categorized in a row
Rows
An element of a pivot table that defines which state will be displayed
Values
A type of chart that presents data with vertical bars
Column chart
The line of data that spans from the left to the right of a chart or graph
Horizontal axis
The horizontal lines that correspond with each value on the vertical axis of a chart
Gridlines
The actual value of data displayed in a chart or graph
Data labels
A visual key that describes the data series used on a chart and the colored elements that represent those series
Legend
When a category of data in a chart is compared to itself. Example, if a chart contains blue and orange, vertical columns, the blue columns can be compared to learn more about the trend of the date of represented by the blue columns.
Intra-category comparison
When data sets in a chart are compared to each other. Example, if a chart contains blue and orange, vertical columns, the height of both colored bars can be compared to each other.
