Dual excecutive

The head of government and head of state are diffrent, in Iran the prez is head of gov and the supreme leader is the head of state.

Election system for the majiles

25% threshold /percent of vote needed, a qualified plurality, most votes, and if not theres a runoff. single member districts—> screeed by guardian council before can appear on ballot, all conservative but usually majiles is more reformist.

Election system for president

majority required, more than fifty percent, if not there's a run off, canidates are highly screened down from hundreds to only single/tens digits.

Expediency Council

expidte proccess of mking laws, resolve majiles and Guardian council when they can't pass a law (pass have legilsation veote copy paste). but usally, side more with guardian council/religous overisght. because all council is handpicked by surpreme leader and 1;2 of guradian council is picked by the supreme leader. so usually less reformist laws are made

Guardian Council

To make religious laws and to oversee the majiles’ laws to make sure they follow relgious laws, can veto the majiles. ½ picked by surpeme leader ½ picked byhead of judiciary (whom the supreme leader appoints) screen all canidates.

Significace of the Islamic Revolution

Regime change, from a monarchy to an authoritarian regime —> theocracy. It was generally supported and non-violent.

Jurist Guardian ship/clerical rule

Islamic jurists have theabillity tomake political laws, tomake sure that the government adheres to islamic proncipales, the jurist-supreme leader-controls all three branches, and can appoint mainpeople and also influence poltiics through his speeches, and GC the islamic jurists can rule over secular rulees.and can reject canidates they dont like.

Role of Majiles

Uncameral legislature-like china, but unlike that China is forced to say yes to government, but in Iran the governemnt usually says no to the majiles. They are a democratic institution that isn't based on religon and still has to follow religon, btu all canidates arepre-screened by GC.Minority seats are guarenteed-religious minorities-demcoratic.

Renteir State

gov revenye dependent on international economy because thy onlymake money for their ountry from exporting the natural resources in their country. Have little txes in country when economy is doing well but also take away civil liberties because they have more money.

Resource cure/ curse and its effects

If they don't produce enough of that natural resource theywon't make enough money but usualyl its the failure of the world's economy the prices fluctuate heavily so if th their pre-planned budget could eitehr be too much too little or jsut right, makign problems in not having enough money, also producing less oil and spending more money on subsidies/benefits for citizens

Significance of the 2009 presedinatl election

Citizens realized elctions weren't free and fair and protestd, and government sued force agaisnt them to stop the movement (green movemnt) only demanding civil lberties ansd that has set a mindest of the govenrment is corrput and is now applying dforce on its citizens and now protesting the governemnt iteslef but a precend of foce has alreadhy been set and now government is using more force on citizens to stop movements/protests

Supreme leader

selected by assembly of religious experts, most powerul, can veto the majiles, appoints evryone else, basiclly, ½ of gc, expedienct countil, head of judiciary, commander in cheif, has final say, experts can but wouldnt dismiss them because ther were elceed and prescreened by the gc who are appoitned by supreme leader,a ll power funnesl back to him through appointments and screening.

Khomeni and ahmadinejad

Khomeni- millitary spending, nationalization, oil-, stricter social laws, headscargs for women, mroe traditional values, le/relgious values, mroe laws against drinking, theocratic in political islamic governance over democracy that isn't relgious.

Adhmadenicjad- subsidies, reduce overty—came from poverty, igh oil prives, mroe media restrcitons, green movement, confrontance agsint west.
