What is a transformer?
A device that changes the voltage of electricity, making it higher or lower.
How is electricity measured?
Electricity is measured in amps and volts.
What does a volt and amp measure?
The volt measures the strength of an electrical current. The amp measures how fast the electrical current moves.
What is the difference between AC and DC powers?
The electrons in a DC flow in one direction, while the electrons in an AC move quickly back and forth.
what change has to take place inside the power cord in order for the device to function properly?
the AC power has to be changed into DC power.
What type of electricity do most homes in the US use?
AC electricity.
Why did Edison think AC was a bad idea?
He thought AC was too powerful and dangerous
What are the characteristics of DC electricity?
DC electricity flows in one direction and loses power over long distances.
What did Edison contribute to electrical power in 1882?
He helped build the first large electric power plant using DC electricity.
what role did transformers play in AC system?
They changed the voltage of electrical currents
What is a characteristic of AC electricity?
Electrons switch directions back and forth in the wire.
How does a transformer relate to AC electricity?
It is used to make AC electricity strong and send it without losing much power.
What is the advantage of using a transformer for homes?
It can lower the voltage for use in homes.
