Nutrition
The study of how compounds in foods nourish and affect body functions and health.
Nutrients
Components of food that provide energy, building blocks, and maintenance for body functions.
Macronutrients
Energy-yielding nutrients needed in higher amounts, including carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
Micronutrients
Non energy-yielding nutrients such as vitamins and minerals needed in smaller quantities.
Calorie
A measurement of energy; specifically, the amount of heat it takes to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 degree Celsius.
Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA)
Intake values that meet the needs of almost all healthy people in a population (approximately 97%).
Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI)
Nutrient intake standards that include RDA, Adequate Intake (AI), Estimated Average Requirements (EAR), and Tolerable Upper Intake Levels (UL).
Phytochemicals
Non-nutrient compounds of vegetable origin that confer certain health benefits.
Active Site
The location on an enzyme where substrates bind for a chemical reaction to occur.
Water
A vital nutrient needed for many bodily processes, acting as a lubricant, protective cushion, and key component in chemical reactions.
