“Land immediately” def
land on the nearest clear area where a safe LDG can be performed
if required, be prepared to: enter autorotation during approach
“Land as soon as practical” def
LDG site is at pilot’s discretion based on nature of problem and available LDG areas
flight beyond nearest airport is not recommended
Power Failure - General // Caused By + Indications
Caused by:
engine or drive system failure
Indications:
low RPM horn
Engine failure indications:
change in noise level
nose left yaw
an engine oil pressure light
decreasing N1 or N2 RPM
Drive System Failure indications:
unusual noise or vibration
nose right or left yaw
decreasing Rotor RPM while N2 RPM increasing
Power Failure - General // EP + Cautions
EP:
lower collective to enter autorotation
reduce A/s to power-off VNE (100 KIAS) or below
Cautions:
aft cyclic is required when collective is lowered @ high A/s
do not apply aft cyc. during touchdown or ground slide to prevent possible blade strike to tailcone
Power Failure Above 500’ AGL // EP
Autorotation
drop - lower collective (to maintain R RPM)
R rudder
A/s: ~70 KIAS (glide)
a little aft cyclic
Adjust collective
keep R RPM 95% to 106%
if too light and 95% unattainable, collective full down
select LDG spot + if possible, maneuver into headwind
a restart may be attempted if time allows
if unable to restart, turn off unnecessary switches and fuel valve
@ ~40’ AGL
begin cyclic flare (to reduce rate of descent and fwd A/s)
@ ~8’ AGL
fwd cyclic to level
raise collective just before touchdown (to cushion landing)
Touchdown
Power Failure Between 8’ and 500’ AGL // EP
lower collective (to maintain rotor RPM)
Adjust collective
keep R RPM 95% to 106%
if too light and 95% unattainable, collective full down
maintain A/s until ground is approached, then begin cyclic flare (to reduce rate of descent and fwd A/s)
@ ~8’ AGL
fwd cyclic to level
raise collective just before touchdown (to cushion landing)
Touchdown
Power Failure Below 8’ AGL // EP
right pedal (to prevent yaw)
allow helicopter to settle
raise collective just before touchdown (to cushion landing)
Air Restart Procedure
EP:
if N1 above 20%:
press start button (within 10 sec of power loss (i.e. an immediate restart))
If N1 @ or below 20%:
fuel cutoff - pull OFF
Throttle - closed
Start button - push and release
N1 15% or above - push fuel cutoff ON
After peak MGT - Throttle full open
Air Restart Caution
Cautions:
do not attempt restart if engine malfunction is suspected or before safe autorotation is established
Max Glide Distance Configuration vs Min Rate of Descent Configuration
Max Glide Distance Configuration
A/s: ~90 KIAS
R RPM: ~90%
Min Rate of Descent Configuration
A/s: ~60 KIAS
R RPM: ~90%
Emergency Water Landing - Power Off // EP
follow Power Failure Over Land EPs until contacting water + unlatch doors if time permits
when contact occurs — apply lateral cyclic (to stop rotors) (gouge: go RIGHT to prevent injury)
release seatbelt + clear A/c when rotors stop
Emergency Water Landing - Power On // EP
hover above water
unlatch doors
passengers exit A/c
fly safe distance away (to avoid injuring passengers)
Battery and Generator switches — OFF
Throttle — close
As A/c contacts water:
Cyclic — level A/c
Collective — full (up or down?)
lateral cyclic (to stop rotors) (gouge: go RIGHT to prevent injury)
release seatbelt + clear A/c when rotors stop
Loss of Tail Rotor Thrust in Forward Flight // Indication + EP
Indications:
nose right yaw which cannot be correct by full left pedal
EP:
Throttle - closed
Enter Autorotation
70 KIAS if practical
Select LDG site
execute autorotation landing
Loss of Tail Rotor Thrust in Forward Flight // Note
Note:
when a suitable landing site is not available, the vertical stabilizers may permit limited controlled flight @ low power settings & A/s above 70 KIAS
however, prior to reducing A/s, enter full Autorotation
Headset Audio Failure // EP + Caution
EP:
land as soon as practical
Caution
for A/c which provide low RPM horn through the audio system, pilot will not hear horn with failed headset
Engine Fire During Start or Shutdown // indication + EP
Indication
excessive MGT -or-
engine fire warning light ON
EP
Fuel cutoff - pull OFF
start button - Push and release
Fuel valve knob - pull OFF
battery switch - OFF (when MGT decreases to 150 deg C or if fire worsens)
if time permits, rotor brake
exit A/C
Engine Fire in Flight // EP
enter autorotation
cabin heat - OFF (if time permits)
if engine is running
land immediately
fuel cutoff - pull OFF
fuel valve knob - pull OFF
If engine stops running
fuel cutoff - pull OFF
fuel valve knob - pull OFF
complete autorotation LDG
If time permits, rotor brake
exit A/c
Electrical Fire // EP + note
Battery and Generator switches — OFF
cabin vents — open
land immediately
fuel cutoff — pull OFF
fuel valve knob — pull off
if time permits, rotor brake
Exit A/c
Note:
low RPM warning system is inoperative w/ battery and generator switches both OFF
Tachometer Failure
If either R or N2 tach malfunctions:
use remaining tach to monitor RPM
If unclear which is wrong/both are wrong,
allow Power Turbine Governor to control RPM
and LASAP
hydraulic system failure // indication
heavy or stiff cyclic and collective controls
control is normal except for increase in stick forces
intermittent and/or vibrating feedback (loss of hydraulic fluid)
hydraulic system failure // EP
HYD switch — verify ON
if hydraulic not restored, HYD switch — OFF
adjust A/s and flgiht condition as desired for comfortable control
LASAP
run-on landing — if suitable landing surface is available
Power Turbine Governor failure // indication + EP
indication
rise or fall of N2 RPM
EP:
If N2 over speeds:
attempt to control RPM w/ throttle
If N2 under speeds:
verify throttle — full open
collective — lower (to control RPM)
If governor failure expected — LASAP
If manual RPM control is not possible:
collective — lower
throttle — close
complete Autorotation LDG (per power failure procedures)
