Pueblo Revolt (1680)
Cause: Native Americans (Pueblo) faced religious persecution, economic exploitation, brutality as a result of Spanish Colonization
Effects: NA’s won the revolt and gained Spanish independence for 12 years. When the Spanish returned, they became more tolerant and accommodated to the native culture.
Bacon’s Rebellion (1675-1676)
Causes:
Settlers felt threatened by NA and sought after the strict enforcement of policies that would drive them out.
Governor Berkeley (lenient towards NA) denied the concerns.
Discontent with taxes and tobacco prices, wanted more farming land.
Effects:
Nathaniel Bacon led militia of colonists to raid NA settlements.
Jamestown was burned down
The rebellion forced Virginia to begin relying on African slave labor over indentured servants.
King Phillip’s/Metacom War (1675-1678)
Causes:
Colonists wanted more land and encroached on NA settlements.
Relationship between the Wampanoag and English deteriorated after the death of the Wampanoag chief, who was replaced by Metacomet
Tensions between the two groups arose due to culture clashes and political shifts.
Effects:
Resulted in the deaths of thousands of NA and colonists.
The power of NA tribes diminished.
Native Americans were subjected into slavery both locally and abroad.
French and Indian War (1754-1763)
Part of the 7 Years War
Causes:
Fueled by disputes over territory and trade in the Ohio River Valley.
British were encroaching on French settlements
(Both allied with French, war named after French and Indian relationship)
Washington, sent to persuade French to leave, was rebuffed and led an attack at Fort Duquesne and took it back, French took it again.
Effects:
War ending with Treaty of Paris in 1763
Spain ceded Florida to British and gained control of former French lands in the West.
All land east of Mississippi River was given to British
Europeans continued to migrate westward and faced conflicts with Indinas, Pontiac would lead raids against them (Pontiac’s Rebellion)
British Parliament established Proclamation line of 1763 which forbade colonists from migrating westward of the Appalachian mountains.
British national debt doubled

Revolutionary War (1775-1783)
Causes:
British Parliment imposes numerous taxes on the British colonies - colonists boycotted and protested against.

Boycotts
Boston Tea Party (1773) - Sons of Liberty sneak into British shops and dump tea into harbor, British are enraged and inflict stricter regulations
Boston Massacre (1770) - colonists taunt British troops, shots fired
