Titration
A technique used to determine the concentration of a solution (analyte) by reacting it with a solution of known concentration (titrant).
NaOH
Sodium hydroxide, the analyte in this experiment, whose concentration is being determined.
HCl
Hydrochloric acid, the titrant in this experiment, with a known concentration of 0.10 mol/L.
Buret
A piece of lab equipment used to accurately dispense a variable amount of liquid, used to deliver the HCl titrant.
Erlenmeyer flask
A type of flask used to hold the analyte (NaOH) during the titration process.
Phenolphthalein
A chemical indicator used to signal the endpoint of the titration by changing color (in this case, becoming colorless).
Endpoint
The point in a titration where the indicator changes color, signifying that the reaction is complete.
Molarity (mol/L)
A unit of concentration expressing the number of moles of solute per liter of solution.
Volume (mL)
The amount of space a substance occupies, measured in milliliters in this experiment.
Safety
Important lab safety guidelines, including wearing a lab coat and safety glasses, securing long hair, and understanding P and H phrases.
