What is a covalent compound?
A compound formed between two nonmetals, involving the sharing of electrons.
How are binary ionic compounds named (metal + nonmetal)?
The metal name is written first, followed by the nonmetal name with an -ide suffix.
How are ionic compounds with transition metals named?
The metal name is written first, followed by its charge in Roman numerals in parentheses (if variable), and then the nonmetal name with an -ide suffix.
How are binary covalent compounds named?
Prefixes are used to indicate the number of atoms for each element. The first element keeps its name (mono is usually omitted if it's the first element), and the second element gets an -ide suffix.
