Succession
A series of changes that occur in a community after a disturbance.
Climax community
A stable, mature community resulting from ecological succession.
Primary succession
Occurs after severe disturbances where no vegetation or soil remains.
Pioneer species
The first species that can colonize an area during primary succession, such as lichens.
Secondary succession
Occurs after a disturbance but soil is still present, and happens much faster than primary succession.
Disturbances
Events such as floods, wildfires, or farming that commonly change communities.
Examples of primary succession causes
Volcanic eruptions and glaciers retreating.
Examples of secondary succession causes
Forest fire, flood, and logging.
Ecological succession
The process of change in ecosystems after disturbances, leading to a stable climax community.
