algebraic expression

a mathematical statement containing numerals, operators, grouping symbols, and symbols or variables for unknown values; an expression does not contain and equal sign or inequality symbol

coefficient

the number or constant that multiplies a variable in an algebraic expression; if no number is specified the coefficient is 1

constant

a fixed value

equation

a mathematical relation statement where 2 equivalent expressions and values are separated by an equal sign

factor

one of the numbers or variables that are multiplied together to produce a product

like terms

terms that have the same variables and powers

term

a single mathematical expression that may be a single number, a single variable, or several variables separated by addition or subtraction

variable

a symbol, usually a letter, which take the place of an unknown value

addition property of equality

if a=b, then a+c=b+c, where a, b , and c are real numbers

division property of equality

if a=b and c ≠ 0, then a/c=b/c, where a,b, and c are real numbers

distributive property of multiplication over addition

a (b+c)=a x b +a x c, where a , b, and c are real numbers

multiplication property of equality

if a=b, then a x c= b x c, where a, b, and c are real numbers

simple interest

a method of computing interest; interest is computed from the (origional) principle alone, no matter how much money has occurred so far

subtraction property of equality

if a=b, then a - c =b-c, where a,b,and c are real numbers
