What is research?
The process by which methods are used to extend the body of knowledge and acquire knowledge about the world.
Purpose of psychological research
To advance knowledge, improve clinical practice, inform policy and decision-making, solve real-world problems, and foster critical thinking.
Indigenisation
The integration of indigenous perspectives and knowledge systems within a greater research context.
Criticality in research
The ability to question and analyze the assumptions and biases inherently present in research practices.
Positivism
A paradigm which holds that reality can be observed and measured objectively regardless of personal beliefs.
Interpretivism
A paradigm that emphasizes understanding the subjective meanings of social phenomena.
Transformative research
An approach that seeks to create social change and empower marginalized communities through the research process.
Pragmatic approach to research
A worldview that focuses on practical consequences and the applicability of research findings.
Decolonising research
The process of challenging colonial frameworks in research and integrating diverse knowledge systems.
Epistemological pluralism
The acceptance and integration of multiple ways of knowing and understanding the world.
