Did Thomas Jefferson live up to his own ideals during his presidency? Presidency 1801-1809. 

No because he had the Louisiana Purchase, he didn’t know if he could take land, which was growing a federal power because he is going against the constitution because it never said he could take the land, took land from France because it made their economy better and wanted to expand, therefore being an abusive federal government and Marbury v. Madison.

More resources which led to increased economy, more immigration because people wanted to explore the West.

End of the Federalist party, era of political stability. The Missouri Compromise that prohibits slaves to come to Missouri under Monroe, monroe doctrine.

Federal power of state supreme court decisions. states had given up part of sovereignty in constitution.

Monroe declared all of the West to the US and no Europeans could not go.

Why were the elections of 1824 and 1828 significant?

1824: Corrupt bargain with Clay v AJ v John Quincy Adams win in the end, 1828, Adams convinces Clay to help him and he runs against AJ, Jackson wins.

To what extent did Jackson represent the rise of the “common man”?

He did not have political background, he let all men not owning property vote, he had conventions where regulate people come and vote on who the nominee was going to be, got rid of the bank bc he thought that it would help the common people, election of 1832 issues of national bank.

Through making the states become in disagreement with each other, causing division in South and West bc of laws with slavery.

How did Jackson increase the power of the presidency?

Increased voting rights for men with unowned property, populist appeal that made him defy congress, have executive authority, and position the president as direct representative. Veto power to recharter second. bank, challenged Supreme Court by going against it’s ruling protecting the treaty of the Cherokee Nation. Jackson framed the bank as an institution that benefited the wealthy elite at the expense of the common people, which gave him a popular mandate to dismantle it.

How did opposition to Jacksonianism lead to the rise of the Whigs?

Jackson’s opponents like Daniel Webster and Henry Clay did not like that Jackson was going against the bank because they saw it as excessive federal power, which then had the term for whigs that were against monarchial power from British.

Jackson’s Presidency 1829-1837 Key Events and Developments that occured and changed 

  • Became president at a time where democracy abandoned property requirements in voting, got rid of national bank because he believed that it was unconstitutional because it placed too much power in the elite, and made it worse for the people because there were state banks that had unregulated paper currency, he wins the election of 1832, Tariffs of Abonimations put new tariffs on imported goods, favored Northern manufacturers by placing taxes on imported goods, which angered Southerners who saw it as benefiting the North at their expense

  • 5 civilized tribes that made their own version of Constitution, US makes it difficult to trade with Spain and made Seminole people leave, Indian Removal Act (1830) treaties to remove indigenous, congress gives money to finance negotiations to relocate tribes, 2nd Seminole war: Natives are forced to live in reservations and is not like where they lived before and were forced to walk in Trial of Tears

  • Nullification: SC protests 1828 tariff on imported goods- claim they could nullify state law

  • Clay in congress proposes to gradually lower the tarrif- Jackson proposes bill to force SC to comply because SC wanted to leave union to succeed, SC backs down
