List the stages of mitosis in order
interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase
What observations did you make during the animation from interphase back to interphase again?
Varies, student should describe one cell dividing and parts of that cell duplicating and separating.
Through ————- , —————-cells distribute genetic material to daughter nuclei. —————- divides the ————— and distributes organelles to the ——- newly formed ————- cells.
Mitosis, eukaryotic, cytokinesis, cytoplasm, two, daughter
Each ————— strand was replicated earlier during the —————- of the —————— to form two ————— strands called ————————-. These chromatids are held together by —————
DNA, S-phase, interphase, identical, sister chromatids, centromere
During metaphase the nuclear membrane has —————- disintegrated. The ——————— reach the centromeres and align the sister —————— along the center of the cell.
Completely, spindle fibers, chromatids
During prophase, the sister chromatids ————— and supercoil and become————— for the first time during the cell cycle. The —————————- begins to disintegrate. The —————— replicate and move away from each other due to micro tubular action.
Shorten, visible, nuclear membrane, centrioles
Mitosis produces ONLY what type of cells?
Body cells
Why is it important that during mitosis, your cells only make identical cells?
You want to make sure that you have identical cells to replace what was lost
What cell organelle holds your DNA and why is DNA important?
The nucleus holds our DNA and it is important because it holds our genetic information
What two things are chromosomes made of?
DNA and protein
How many chromosomes do our body cells contain?
46
Prophase
Nucleus is still present and chromosomes condense and are visible.
"Pro" means first
Metaphase
Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell and the nucleus is no longer there.
"M" for middle, chromosomes align in the middle of the cell
Anaphase
Chromosomes move away to opposite sides (poles) of the cell. Move by the help of spindles.
"A" for away; chromosomes are moving away from the center of the cell
Telophase
Chromosomes are at opposite ends and new nuclei surround the chromosomes.
"T" for two; two new nuclei are formed and end goal is 2 new cells.
Cytokinesis
Cytoplasm is split to create two separate cells.
"C" if for cytoplasm splitting
What is the uncoiled stringy DNA in interphase called?
Chromatin
