what are the five levels of the hierarchy
from bottom to top:
physiological needs
safety needs
belongingness/love needs
esteem needs
self-actualisation
outline physiological needs
needs are basic and fairly apparent: vital for our survival
water, food, breathing, sex, homeostasis, excretion
outline safety needs
needs for safety and security become primary
financial security, health and wellness, safety against injuries and accidents
like finding a job, obtaining health insurance, contributing money to savings account — actions are motivated by safety and security needs
outline belongingness/love needs
love, acceptance, belonging — need for emotional relationships drive human behaviour
friendships, romantic attachment, family, social groups, community groups, churches + religious organisations
to avoid problems like loneliness, depression, anxiety, — important for people to feel loved and accepted by others
outline esteem needs
people need to sense that they are valued by others and feel they are making a contribution to the world
those who lack self-esteem and the respect of others can develop feelings of inferiority, together, esteem and social levels make up the psychological needs of the hierarchy
participation in professional activities, academic accomplishments, athletic of team participation, and personal hobbies can play a role in fulfilling the esteem needs
outline self-actualisation needs
self-actualisation people are self-aware, concerned with personal growth, less concerned with the opinions of others, and interested in fulfilling their potential
morality, creativity, problem solving, lack of prejudice, acceptance of facts
purpose of the hierarchy
represents parts of an importance psychology, rather than focusing on abnormal behaviour and development
Maslows humanistic psychology was focused on the development of healthy individuals
