Theocracy
A system based on religious rule.
Supreme leader
The executive who is a cleric and the most powerful person in Iran.
Guardian Council
A twelve-member body in Iran that has the power to reject or approve legislation and reviews candidates for the presidency, parliament, local councils, and the Assembly of Experts.
Expediency Council
A body appointed by the supreme leader of Iran to act as an advisory council that has the power to reject and rewrite proposed legislation and create new laws without parliamentary approval.
Majles
Iran’s unicameral legislature.
Assembly of Experts
An elected body in Iran that has the power to select the supreme leader and remove him if he is unable to perform his duties.
Multimember district (MMD) system
A method for electing members of a legislature in which two or more representatives are elected from a district.
Basij
A voluntary paramilitary force under the authority of the Revolutionary Guard that serves as the morality police in Iran.
