Homogenous stress distribution
Occurs when the stress is the same at every point across the loaded cross-section of a material
Memeber
An individual straight structural element of a truss that connects two joints and only carries axial forces
Stress
A quantity that describes the distribution of internal forces within a body
Normal stress
The stress that develops when a force is applied perpendicular to the surface of an object
Strain
A quantity that describes the deformations that occur within a body
Shear stress
A measure of a meterial’s resistance to deformation under forces applied parallel to its surface
Shear strain
A measure of the angular deformation of a material when it is subject to a shear force
Ductile material
A material that can undergo significant plastic deformation before fracture
Brittle material
A material that fractures with very little plastic deformation
Hooke’s Law (Statement)
Within the elastic limit, the extension (or compression) of a material is directly proprotional to the applied force
Hooke’s Law (Equation)
Stress=Young’s modulus x strain
