4dx test should be run annually as part of wellness appointments. Needs to be run before sending home any heartworm prevention (or giving the proheart injection) because it can be dangerous to give heartworm prevention to a HW+ dog

feline leukemia – spread through simple interactions between cats like sharing water bowls, predisposes the cat to developing leukemia early in life

feline immunodeficiency virus – causes cats to be less able to fight off infection and can be prone to chronic infections, transmitted via deep bite wound from infected cat

fecal float purpose

tests for GI parasites including hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms, whipworms, and coccidia by looking for the eggs on the fecal sample

fecal float limitation

some of the GI parasites are not shedding eggs all the times – a negative fecal float doesn’t 100% rule out GI parasites → PCR tests can be sent to IDEXX

fleas description

pets that are highly allergic to fleas may overgroom to the point that owners cannot see fleas on them. This is most common in cats. An exam should always be recommended to treat secondary skin infections if fleas are suspected

fleas notes

• Causes itchiness and hair loss

• Often entire households are affected

• Only prescription preventions should be recommended as treatment due to common toxicity issues with OTC products

putting dog formulated topicals on a cat can cause seizures and hyperthermia which can be fatal

ticks description

Ticks only hibernate in cold weather, they don’t die. For this reason, in this area we recommend tick control year round → in this area, every month has at least one day that’s warm enough for ticks to be out

Tick borne diseases are often life long and can have flares even after treatment

An IDEXX tick borne disease panel can be sent out for a more comprehensive testing of more tick borne diseases

when should treatment start?

HW treatment should be initiated as soon as possible after a positive test (SNAP confirmed by a microfilaria test sent to IDEXX) to prevent long term damage to the heart

heartworm disease treatment

heartworm treatment length, treatment, and injections.

Total HW treatment takes a number of months

Treatment starts with a course of steroids and doxycycline – these reduce the chance of anaphylaxis (allergic) reaction when the heartworms are killed by the first injection

Injections are given in a series of 3. Shots 1 and 2 are one month apart. Shots 2 and 3 are one day apart.
