Middle school / junior high in France (ages 11–15).

First year of collège (≈ 6th grade U.S., age 11–12).
cinquième
Second year of collège (≈ 7th grade U.S., age 12–13).
quatrième
Third year of collège (≈ 8th grade U.S., age 13–14).
troisième
Fourth year of collège (≈ 9th grade U.S., age 14–15).
le lycée
High school in France (ages 15–18).
seconde
First year of lycée (≈ 10th grade U.S., age 15–16).
première
Second year of lycée (≈ 11th grade U.S., age 16–17).
terminale
Final year of lycée (≈ 12th grade U.S., age 17–18).
le Baccalauréat (le bac)
Rigorous exam taken in terminale; required for university entrance, with about 65 % pass rate.
