protects freedom of religion, assembly, press, petition, and speech

2nd Amendment

right to bear arms

3rd Amendment

lodging soldier in homes is only permissible with consent of owner

4th Amendment

prohibits unreasonable search and seizure, warrants with probable cause

exclusionary rule - evidence obtained in violation of this amendment can’t be used

5th Amendment

due process, no double jeopardy, no forced self incrimination, eminent domain

6th Amendment

right to a speedy public trial, right to a lawyer, trial by jury in criminal cases

7th Amendment

trial by jury in civil cases and contested private matters (not incorporated into states)

8th Amendment

no cruel or unusual punishment

9th Amendment

all the rights of the people are not explicitly listed in the Constitution, extends beyond

10th Amendment

powers not delegated to federal govt by constitution are reserved for the states

11th Amendment

prohibits federal courts from hearing cases lodged against one state by citizens of another

13th Amendment

Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime, shall exist within the US

14th Amendment

every person born in US is a citizen, equal protection under law, can’t infringe on rights without due process, privileges and immunities clause

15th Amendment

every man has the right to vote, regardless of race

16th Amendment

established Congress's right to impose Federal income tax, uses for grants in aid, federal govt takes all income taxes

17th Amendment

people directly elect US senators instead of state legislatures

18th Amendment

prohibited the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors

19th Amendment

grants women citizens the right to vote

22nd Amendment

limited presidential term to two terms

23rd Amendment

gave residents of the district of Colombia (Washington DC) the right to vote for electors to their own electoral college, which elects the president

24th Amendment

bans poll taxes

25th Amendment

- procedures if president is alive but incapacitated

- president alerts congress if unable to perform duties, vp takes over

- if president can’t alert congress, 2/3 vote in congress to allow president to stay in power

26th Amendment

lowers voting age to 18
