Canis familiaris
The scientific name for the domestic dog.
American Kennel Club (AKC)
The largest dog club in the USA, established in 1884 to advance purebred dogs. The AKC provides a range of services including the registration of purebred dogs, recognition of breeds, maintaining a stud book, and promoting responsible dog ownership. Additionally, it hosts various events and competitions that showcase the skills and characteristics of different breeds as well as supports breed clubs and organizations that focus on specific breeds.
Purebred
Dogs whose mother and father are the same breed and are of unmixed descent.
Mixed breed
Dogs whose parents are not of the same breed, with at least one breed known.
Mutt/Mongrel
Dogs whose parents belong to three or more breed types.
Hybrid/Designer dogs
Offspring of two purebred parents from different breeds.
Sporting Group
A dog breed group including pointers, retrievers, setters, and spaniels.
Working Group
A group of breeds created for herding, hunting, guarding, and serving.
Herding Group
