Gas Exchange
The process of oxygen moving into the bloodstream and carbon dioxide being removed.
Perfusion
The delivery of oxygenated blood to tissues and the removal of waste products.
Diffusion
The process by which gases exchange at the alveolar capillary membrane.
Normal Respiratory Physiology
The processes involved in gas exchange, including ventilation and diffusion.
Vital Signs
Measurements of essential body functions, including heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation.
Supplemental Oxygenation Devices
Devices used to deliver additional oxygen to patients to improve oxygen saturation.
SVC/IVC
Superior vena cava and inferior vena cava; vessels that return deoxygenated blood to the heart.
Hypoxemia
A condition characterized by low oxygen levels in the blood.
Tachypnea
Rapid breathing, often a sign of respiratory distress.
ECG or EKG
An electrocardiogram; a test that records the heart's electrical activity.
Echocardiogram
An ultrasound of the heart that creates images to assess heart function.
Arterial Blood Gases (ABG)
A blood test measuring oxygen and carbon dioxide levels to determine lung function.
Homeostasis
The maintenance of stable internal conditions in the body.
Continuous Monitoring
Ongoing assessment of a patient's vital signs and overall condition.
Signs of Impaired Gas Exchange
Symptoms such as abnormal breath sounds, low oxygen saturation, and dyspnea.
Priority Assessment Findings
Critical signs that indicate the need for immediate medical intervention.
