Transitions
Words or phrases that help to organize ideas and improve the flow of text.
First, Second, Third
Transitions that show steps in a process or list ideas.

Point of View (POV)

Register
The personal or emotional distance between the writer and the audience.
Formal Register
Associated with being objective, impassive, and using sophisticated vocabulary.
Colloquial Register
Shows closeness between writer and audience, often subjective and emotional.

Information or data used to support arguments in academic writing.
Signal Verbs and Phrases
Words that introduce evidence and clarify the source of ideas.
Unity (in paragraphs)
A characteristic where a paragraph develops one idea at a time.
Coherence (in paragraphs)
The logical sequence of ideas in a text without irrelevant details.
Structure (in paragraphs)
The organization where the paragraph starts with the main idea followed by supporting sentences.
