Freud's 5 stages of psychosexual personality development
Oral, Anal, Phallic, Latent, Genital
Freud's Oral Stage
Birth to 1 year.
Libido focused on gratification & comfort via tasting and sucking. Problems with weaning lead to fixation in this stage --> aggression, dependency, drinking/eating/smoking problems, etc.
Freud's Anal Stage
1 - 3 years.
Libido focused on bladder & bowel control. If child is shamed or parents are too lenient re: toilet training, leads to fixation:
shame --> anal-retentive personality (messy, wasteful, destructive)
leniency --> anal-expulsive personality (rigid, orderly, obsessive)
Freud's Phallic Stage
3 - 6 years.
Libido focused on the genitals. Oedipus Complex/Electra Complex arise here. Child begins to observe differences between males and females.
Freud's Latent Stage
6 - Puberty.
Libido is suppressed, sexual drive redirected into social and intellectual pursuits; ego and superego develop
Freud's Genital Stage
Puberty - Death.
Interest in being sexual with others; caring about others' well-being
