plays on the idiom “half-hearted”, perhaps to suggest how lord Byron truly feels about the situation. One side of his heart is with Lady Elizabeth however, the other half is with his reputation. More clearly, how only one of the pair is broken-hearted. CONTEXT: Lord Byron oppressing his emotions contradictory of romantic era but in character of the sporadic “Lord Byron”.

APPEARS VERY NEAT AND YET CONSTRICTED, AS LORD BYRON IS STRUGGLING TO BOTH CONTAIN HIS EMOTIONS WHILST EXPRESSING THEM AS THE STYLE OF ROMANTISICM SO PORTRAYS.
