Perform hand hygiene and explain the procedure to the resident.
• Verify the resident’s identity by confirming their name with the diet card.
• Position the resident upright (75°–90° angle) and protect clothing with a napkin or clothing protector.
• Assist with resident hand hygiene (using a disposable wipe, washcloth, or sanitizer) ensuring hands are dry.
• Sit facing the resident; describe the food and fluids being offered.
• Feed small amounts gradually with frequent fluid offers, allowing ample time for chewing and swallowing.
• After feeding, wipe the resident’s hands and mouth.
• Remove and dispose of any soiled protectors, return the resident to an upright position.
• Record intake accurately (as a percentage and in milliliters), place a call light within reach, and perform hand hygiene.
