explains how two variables are related, how the IV affects the DV

Ex. higher grades lead to higher self esteem which leads to higher confidences. Mediator is self esteem

Moderator

Affects the strength and direction of relationship, contextualizes relationship

Ex. exercise for fat loss is more effective for younger people than older people. age is the mediator
