Pointing device
A device used to select and manipulate objects, input data, and issue commands to a computer.
Mouse
A common pointing device moved on a flat surface to move a cursor; may use a ball (older) or optical/laser; can be wireless.
Stylus
A pen-like input device used to draw or write on a screen; also called a digital pen; used with handwriting recognition.
Graphics tablet
An external surface used with a stylus to draw input that is transmitted to a computer.
Handwriting recognition
Technology that converts handwritten input into editable text.
Touch screen
A display that accepts touch input to select objects or issue commands.
Scanner
An input device that captures an image of an object and transfers it to a computer as digital data.
Flatbed scanner
A scanner with a glass flatbed surface for placing documents to be scanned.
Portable scanner
A mobile scanner designed for scanning on the go.
3D scanner
A scanner that captures the shape and features of three-dimensional objects.
Integrated scanner
A scanner built into or integrated with another device (e.g., ATMs).
Optical resolution
Quality of scanned images, measured in dots per inch (dpi); higher resolution gives better quality but larger file sizes.
Barcode
A machine-readable code that represents data as a set of bars.
Barcode reader
An input device that reads barcodes.
QR code
A two-dimensional barcode that stores data in a matrix of squares.
UPC
Universal Product Code; a barcode widely used in retail.
ISBN
International Standard Book Number; barcode used on books.
Code 39
A linear barcode that can encode alphanumeric data.
Intelligent mail code
A barcode used in mail processing to identify mail pieces.
RFID
Radio Frequency Identification; technology that stores and transmits data using RFID tags.
RFID tag
A tag containing a small chip and antenna used for identification.
RFID reader
A device that reads RFID tags to identify objects.
OMR
Optical Mark Recognition; reads marks on forms (e.g., exams, ballots) to score data.
OCR
Optical Character Recognition; converts scanned text into editable text.
MICR
Magnetic Ink Character Recognition; reads magnetic ink characters on checks, used in banking.
Biometric reader
A device that captures biometric data (fingerprint, iris, facial features, voice) for authentication.
Biometric data
Physiological or behavioral characteristics used for identification or authentication.
Digital camera
Digital video cameras (camcorders), PC webcams; store images on digital media; used for surveillance, video conferences, etc.
Audio input
The process of entering audio data into a computer.
Voice input
Inputting spoken words and converting them to digital form (via microphone or headset).
Microphone
A device that captures sound for audio input.
Display device
A device that presents visual output to the user.
CRT
Cathode-ray tube display; bulkier, older technology.
Flat-panel display
Thin display technology (LCD/LED/OLED) that replaces CRTs.
LCD
Liquid Crystal Display; uses backlighting to present images.
LED
Light-Emitting Diode display technology; thin, bright, common in displays.
OLED
Organic LED; emits light with organic materials; variants exist (e.g., flexible, transparent, phosphorescent).
IMOD
Interferometric Modulator Display; bright, clear images, even in sunlight; used in some mobile displays.
Plasma display
Display technology that uses plasma gas layers to produce images; often used on large screens.
SED
Surface-Conduction Electron-Emitter Display; many tiny electron guns; bright and with reduced flicker.
Data projector
A projector that displays computer output on a screen or wall; can be wireless or integrated.
Hologram projector
A projector that displays three-dimensional holographic images.
Printer
Device that produces hard copies of documents; varies by technology, speed, color options, and connections.
Laser printer
Printer that uses laser technology and toner to produce images; generally fast and capable of color in modern models.
Audio output
Output of audio signals as sound; typically via speakers or headphones.
Speaker
An audio output device that produces sound.
