imagery

personification

giving human attributes to an intimate object “ Rowdy and screaming eyes” (pg 52)

parallel syntax

Repetition among adjacent sentences or clauses “ We played until…, We played Until…. (pg 230)

tricolon

A form of parallelism that repeats the same clause or sentence three times,; “ The power of three.” I came, I saw, I conquered

repetition

repeating a word or phrase for emphasis of effect “kill” “fought” (43) “white” (114)

simile

A comparison of two unlike things using “like” or “as” (p3)

allusion

a reference to something known and famous; it’s sort of like an “inside joke” usher song “u got it bad”

active verbs

dynamic verbs that show action action verbs add liveliness and place to a scene or a plot line. “ I crouched low, spread my arms and legs high and wrote and gritted my teeth”

tone

authors stance or attitude towards a subject; word choice can help us identify the tone of a text. tone shifts help demonstrate a change of attitude or change of place/plot
