Family
The basic unit of society, defined by Kingsley Davis as a group of people related by consanguinity that maintains close relationships.
Family of Orientation
The family into which one is born and grows up, typically consisting of two parents.
Family of Procreation
The family that one creates through marriage, adoption, and other legal processes.
Kinship
The bond of blood or marriage which binds people together in groups.
Affinal Kinship
Relationships based upon marriage or cohabitation with collaterals.
Consanguineous Kinship
Connections between people that are traced by blood.
Lineage
The line through which one's descent is traced.
Unilineal Descent
Descent traced through a single ancestor from either male or female line.
Patrilineal
A system where both males and females belong to the kin group of their father.
Matrilineal
Descent that is traced through the female line.
Bilateral Descent
Descent traced through the study of both parents' ancestors.
Monogamy
A marriage where both partners have only one spouse or sexual partner.
Polygamy
A marriage where one individual has multiple spouses.
Endogamy
Compulsory marriage within one's own village, community, or social group.
Exogamy
A marriage custom requiring individuals to marry outside their own group.
Neolocal Residence
When married couples reside independently from both sets of parents.
Patrilocal Residence
When married couples live with the husband's relatives.
Matrilocal Residence
When married couples live with the wife's relatives.
Arranged Marriage
Marriage determined by parents or community leaders rather than by the individuals themselves.
Child Marriage
Marriage arranged for a child long before the marriage takes place.
Compadrazgo
A ritualized form of co-parenthood and family connection through Catholic rituals.
Nuclear Family
A family consisting of a married couple and their biological or adopted child or children.
Extended Family
A family structure that includes additional relatives beyond the nuclear family.
Blended Family
A family formed when parents with children from previous relationships come together.
Political Dynasty
Families whose members are involved in politics.
Political Alliance
An agreement for cooperation between political parties on a common political agenda.
Philippine Law
The 1987 Constitution prohibits political dynasties as defined by law.
