When numbering a carbon chain, which end do you start from?
The end closest to the first side chain or multiple bond.
What do carbon side chains end in when naming simple organic compounds?
"-yl" instead of "-ane"
What is benzene called when it is a side chain?
Phenyl
What ending indicates only single carbon-carbon bonds?
"-ane"
What ending indicates one or more carbon-carbon double bonds?
"-ene"
What ending indicates one or more carbon-carbon triple bonds?
"-yne"
How are halogens named when attached to a carbon chain?
Halogens end with “-o” not “-ine” and are treated as side chains.
What ending do alcohols have?
"-ol" not "e"
What prefix is added before the main chain when carbons form a ring?
"cyclo"
How are ethers named?
Name short chain, name long chain, add 'ether'.
What ending indicates an aldehyde?
"-al"
What ending indicates a ketone?
"-one"
What ending do Carboxylic Acids have?
Drop “e”, add “-oic acid”.
How are esters named?
Name chain attached to the single bonded O, then name main chain normally. Drop “e”, add “-oate”.
How are amines named?
Name carbon side chain(s) end with “-amine”
How are amides named?
Name main chain normally. Drop “e”, add “-amide”.
