Hypothalamus
Brain region controlling the pituitary gland
Pituitary Gland (Anterior)
Secretes hormones that regulate other endocrine glands: Growth Hormone (GH), Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), Luteinizing hormone (LH), Prolactin (PRL), Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
Pituitary Gland (Posterior)
Stores and transports hormones through nervous tissue: Oxytocin (OT), Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
Thyroid Gland
Composed of two lobes joined by isthmus, controls metabolism and cellular oxidation. Two hormones: T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine).
Parathyroid Glands
Embedded into the surface of the thyroid gland.
Adrenal Glands
Two bean shaped glands located atop the kidneys.
Pancreas
Located partially behind the stomach in the abdomen, acts both as an exocrine and an endocrine gland.
Thymus
Situated in the superior thorax, posterior to the sternum and overlying the heart.
Pineal Gland
Hangs from the third ventricle in the brain, pinecone shaped.
Ovaries
Paired, almond-shaped organs located in the pelvic cavity.
Testes
Paired oval organs suspended in a pouch-like sac (scrotum) outside of the pelvic cavity.
