Joint
A place where two bones come together.
Suture
A fibrous joint where interdigitating bones of the skull are held together.
Synovial Joint
A joint characterized by a joint cavity and considerable movement, such as a ball-and-socket joint.
Fibrous Joints
Joints connected by fibrous tissue, allowing little or no movement.
Cartilaginous Joints
Joints where bones are joined by cartilage, which can be immovable (synchondroses) or slightly movable (symphyses).
Synchondroses
Immovable joints joined by hyaline cartilage, like the epiphyseal plates.
Symphyses
Slightly movable joints made of fibrocartilage, such as intervertebral disks.
Range of Motion
The amount of movement that can occur at a joint, affecting both active and passive movements.
Articular Cartilage
Cartilage on the ends of bones at joints that provides a smooth surface for articulation.
Bursae
Fluid-filled sacs that protect joints by reducing friction between moving parts.
Gliding Movement
Movement where two flat surfaces glide over one another.
Angular Movement
Movements such as flexion, extension, abduction, and adduction.
Circular Movement
Movement involving rotation, such as pronation and supination.
Special Movements
Unique movements like elevation, depression, and opposition.
Ankylosing Spondylitis
A chronic inflammatory disease affecting joints, leading to fibrosis and fusion of joints.
