Point of analysis for the seven commandments

.Tone of the commandments is reinforced by absolutist rhetoric (The use of the words: ‘Whatever’, ‘No’ , ‘All’ permit no exception so are well - defined terms so animals have no confusion over a grey area)

.The order of the commandments show a clear agenda as the first commandment talks about what an enemy is and then after that is when a friend is defined (this goes to show how OM’s intention is situate the fear of humans as a core value - which goes on to be later exploited by the pigs)

.Additionally Orwell creates irony as despite the absolutist terms being used when saying ‘all animals are equal’ There is still specific ambiguity towards what equal acc means

‘Nobody stole, nobody grumbled over his rations, the quarreling and biting and jealousy which had been normal features of life in the old days had almost disappeared’

• This is a testament to Orwell’s personal beliefs of communism as here he shows that shortly after the revolution, there was peace and abundance of food. This is representative of Orwell as he believed that in theory socialism was a good cause but as he went on to show later on in the novella, that it is susceptible to corruption

• This is a shortened version of the seven commandments, created by Snowball that embodies the general message of Animalism because the sheep were too fucking dumb to to remember the 7

• This phrase reflects the drawbacks of oversimplification because it is representative of how the people living under a regime are too stupid to understand how it is taking advantage of them

‘“Comrades!” he cried. “You do not imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege?”

• This is in reference to when the pigs took the milk and windfall apple to themselves at the start of the story

• This point represents a critical turning point in the story as up till now the pigs acted equally with themselves as with the other animals

• Squealer uses the rhetorical question ‘you do not imagine’

Manipulation/Deceit/Propaganda

“No one believes more firmly than Comrade Napoleon that all animals are equal. He would be only too happy to let you make your decisions for yourselves. But sometimes you might make the wrong decisions, comrades, and then where should we be?”

• This statement is said just after Snowball was chased off the farm by the dogs

Manipulation/Deceit/Propaganda - By Napoleon

‘‘Comrades, do you know who is responsible for this? Do you know the enemy who has come in the night and overthrown our windmill? SNOWBALL!”

• This is very ironic as it resembles OM’s speech at the start of the novella (by blaming everything on mr.jones) Orwell thus points out that any given political regime will gather support by uniting against a common enemy whether correct or incorrect

• By blaming Snowball, Napoleon is able to divert the animals’ grievances into hatred towards Snowball and in turn, protecting his own reputation
